New Website on Wix!

I am pleased to announce that my new website is up on Wix!  I have chosen to revise my company name to "Modern Traditional Quilts" instead of "Modern Tradition Quilts" as some websites mix up the adjective-noun agreement.

https://moderntraditionalq7.wixsite.com/modern-quilts

I will be concluding this blog and its tutorials. The new website allows for scheduling your longarm quilting service project, selling fabrics, pre-cuts and other services.

I will continue to update my quilting project progress and design process using Instagram.

I'll see you on the new website.  Here is a sneak-peek!

It's Quilt Market Time!

In honors of Quilt Market this weekend, I wanted to share the only project I've ever made that went to Quilt Market.  It went with MODA fabrics in 2016 to feature their "True Luck" fabric line.   The pattern was features for free on their blog.

Here is a link to the free pattern:  https://modafabrics.com/2015/03/sweet-sixteen-quilt.html

While I have never been to quilt market to view the new fabric lines, one of my projects has!  :)

2021- Christmas Quilt

In honor of my grandmother Goff, who belonged to the group "Quiet Quilters" in Rose Park, Utah, I make a quilt every Christmas and give it to someone who has touched my family's life.  The "Quiet Quilters" is what this group of Relief Society women called themselves, but if you ever attended their gathering, they were, "anything but quiet."  These were a group of retired women who met together and tied quilts on a weekly basis and discussed individuals who needed some extra love in their life.  Then, they would have my grandfather doorbell-ditch the quilt on that persons' doorstep.

This year's Christmas quilt goes to a neighbor family who was there for my family in a very dark time.  They had a similar trial and bore their testimony to my family that if you "just keep praying and just keep reading your scriptures - particularly the Book of Mormon, everything will work out."  Because their outreach meant so much to me, they got this year's "Portable Hug."

Here are photos.  For this project, I made my "Sweet Sixteen" quilt and set it on point.  It was quilted with my Baptist Fan "Groovy Boards."

9-Block Charm Square Sampler QAL Finish!

Well, it took me a few years, but I finally finished my 9-Block Charm Square Sampler, I started back in 2015.  https://moderntraditionquilts.blogspot.com/p/charm-square-quilt-along-2015-block.html

Why did it take so long...well, when I started it, we moved to another county.  Then, I started a Master's Degree, then started teaching school again, then off again, then started  back up again...finished a few more endorsements until and finished some "loose" credentials...4 years later...I have a summer with time to quilt!

This quilt top was the closest I ever came to not completing a project once it was started.  At one point, it looked like "barf" -- literally!  One of my lovely children got sick in the night and threw up on the pile of quilt blocks (he was aiming for the trash can but didn't make it).   I had to soak, clean and then press...and re-press all of those seams.

Do you remember how careful we were at pressing perfectly to get perfect points?  Oh!  After washing them...that was a challenge to get it back!

Nordic Sweater Quilt Kit On Connecting Threads - Selling Out

Connecting Threads decided to make my "Nordic Sweater Quilt Pattern" into a Kit.

If you are interested, please click on the word "kit" above.

This is the Connecting Threads version.  It is a deeper red with swirls and a cream with swirls instead of white.

They started marketing it in September and sold out, so contracted a second purchase order for patterns.

I finally buckled down to buy the fabric for my kit and it arrived last night.  They only sent the red fabric -- no binding and no cream.  I called them today, and they have sold out of the cream swirl fabric and it is no longer being manufactured.  They settled on a nice cream lace fabric to swap it out, so I guess I don't get to make a quilt of their "real" fabric line.   Oh well!  I guess it will still work.

I'm glad it went so well.

After talking with me on the phone and finding out that I am the designer, they were really apologetic and said, "Please keep designing.  You do amazing work."

Thanks, I needed to hear that.  It's be a rough go for a while.

If I don't write before then...

Merry Christmas to you all!

This is my original quilt and design.  My oldest son has claimed it for his bedroom!

New Pattern Coming Soon! Scrap-O-Dealy-O Quilt

I am so excited!  In the upcoming issue of Make Modern Magazine will feature my latest quilt design!

Here are some pictures:

It is made using a Layer Cake.  I used "Miss Kate" from Moda Fabrics.

The layer cake I used.

The finished quilt!

My horse Rusty likes it!  Don't worry, the quilt was promptly washed.
I really enjoy the colors Bonnie and Camille use to make their fabric lines.  They make any quilt "pop" -- and with combining the ease of layer cakes, this simple fast quilt is a can't miss!

I quilted the project using Angela Walter's "Dot to Dot" technique from her Craftsy class.  The quilt turned out stunning!  Check out these close-ups.

I followed hte diamond pattern in the fabric on the borders of the quilt.  It was a lot of ruler work but the effort was visually rewarded.  I love the "Dot to Dot" technique and will use it again soon!

Enjoy & Happy Quilting!

Finishing Up Some Loose Ends

Today I am simply finishing up some loose ends.  When a pattern gets published by a magazine or fabric company, they ask for "exclusive rights" to sell that pattern.  Sometimes they are only for 6 months and sometimes it is for a year or more.  These patterns were first published in 2014 and now have passed their exclusive time-clause so I can make them available to the public through my normal selling venues.

Today, "Under the Nordic Sky" and "Punky-Wunkin Quilts Pattern" are now available in my ETSY and CRAFTSY shops.

Latest Publication

I designed this for MakeModern Magazine Issue 8 and it was published.  A good friend of mine, R. Cottongim of A Quilter's Chaos did the piecing for me.  It's great what comes about when friends work together.

This photo shoot was a lot of fun!  Our horses really liked the colors of the quilt and kept checking it out -- much more interesting to them than their saddle blankets that mean "work"!  I had no idea horses liked color as much as I do -- or that they knew how to "Photobomb!"

Photobombers!!!!!

It is true...."Quilting makes the quilt!"

If you would like for me to quilt for you, quits can be scheduled at {gsmower[at]netzero[dot]com}.

Or...schedule on Facebook:

I also have a Facebook page where I can be easily contacted for quilt scheduling.

Edge to Edge Quilting

Hello!

Well, I did it!  I chose to put my family first and my teaching career on hold.  I was offered a pretty fancy teaching position then decided that my children still needed their mommy at home.

After studying my church's teachings on how important it is to be a mom, I left the teaching profession.  When the doors of the high school I teach at close in June, I will be out of work.

That means...

I have time to quilt!

I decided to do free-hand edge-to-edge only (for now, perhaps adding Pantographs and Mix'N'Match later).  My services begin at $0.015 per square inch.  If you need mail-order, it is a $30.00 return postage.  Also, my minimum charge is $30.00 (for wall hangings and et. cetera.)

I also have a Facebook page where I can be easily contacted for quilt scheduling.
