Today, we will be doing the leaves. As you know, the maple leaf is usually shown in a 4-patch setting, 4 leaves per block--very traditional. I've "modernized" it to a 3-patch setting so the leaves have the feel of falling in the autumn wind. It's my "modern quilt" take on the whole leaf block.

PIECING DIRECTIONS:
LEAF ASSEMBLY:
§ Create the half-square triangles for this block. Select the two print 2 7/8” squares and two cream 2 7/8” squares.
§ Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the two cream 3” squares.
§ Layer the cream squares with the green squares right sides facing.
§ Sew a ¼” seam away from the drawn line on BOTH sides of this line.
§ Cut on the drawn line.
§ Press towards the green fabric. This yields 4 half-square triangle (HSTs) units—the amount needed for one block.
§ Create the leaf stem: Refer to the following photos.
Select two 2” white squares and layer one on the right hand side of a print square.
Sew diagonally down the center & trim away excess fabric leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Press seam open. Repeat with the other side.
§ Piece the leaf. Referring to the piecing diagram shown.
§ Top row: One cream square and then 2 HSTs.
Middle row: one HST, then two 2 ½” squares.
§ Bottom row: One HST, one 2 1/2” square, and the leaf stem piece.
§ Press rows in opposite directions so seams may nest.
§ To green leaves only, add the 6 ½” by 3 1/2” rectangles to the top and bottom of this leaf.
§ For the wall hanging, create two leaves of each color. For the throw quilt, create 8 leaves of each color.
To finish this 12 1/2" block:
· Sew the red and gold on top of one another with the light red on top and the gold on bottom below it as shown.
· Press this seam towards the red leaf to reduce bulk.
· Sew the green leaf unit to the left side of the two leaves just created.
· Press the seam towards the green leaf to reduce bulk.
Repeat one more time to create two 12 ½” blocksHappy Quilting!
